Generative AI

What is generative AI?

Generative AI (GenAI) is a type of artificial intelligence that can be used to create new content in the form of text, images, audio, video, code or synthetic data. These models fall under the category of machine learning (ML), a branch of AI in which algorithms help computers learn and change in response to new data without the help of a human being. Previously, machine learning largely involved predictive models that identified and classified patterns in content. GenAI models, however, are able to produce new outputs based on the patterns learned from their training data.

GenAI is typically built using foundation models, which are deep learning models trained on large quantities of unstructured, unlabeled data. Two prominent generative AI frameworks are generative adversarial network (GAN) models and generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) models.

Benefits of generative AI

Generative AI is having a disruptive impact on most, if not all, industries. Some of its broader benefits include:

  • Accelerated innovation: Sophisticated algorithms and predictive modeling are utilized by GenAI to analyze vast amounts of data, identify trends, make predictions and generate content. This can expedite time-to-market for a range of applications, from the development of new drugs, to the creation of advertising campaigns that more aptly target and resonate with consumers.
  • Increased efficiency: Generative AI tools can take a huge amount of data and make it interpretable and useful for decision-making in real time.
  • Enhanced productivity: Automating repetitive and time-consuming tasks using generative AI applications can free up workers to perform higher-skilled work.
  • Improved customer experience: Generative AI applications can be used to provide tailored content to consumers, leading to increased satisfaction and loyalty.
